Ep. 286: The Heart of Markness Led Zeppelin Podcast

I couldn’t keep this one just to myself. It’s too good. Sept. 21 1998 at the Cox Arena is San Diego is a truly magical night. Everyone is playing at 11 and they achieve that elusive synergy wherein the total equals more than the sum of their parts.

In How Many More Times, I’ve never heard the rhythm section sound better or more locked in. Jimmy is 10/10 judged on a Zeppelin scale. He’s precise, inventive, and just a demon with the bow solo, the medleys, and just overall on top of it. Better than the Bizarre Festival in my opinion. There’s a brief Achilles reference played by Jimmy, a bit of Trampled Underfoot, some of the Isley Bros. It’s Your Thing, all played with insane TIGHTNESS.

I play Most High, a tight a modern Whole Lotta Love, and the best How Many More Times I’ve heard since the early 70’s. I must say that Robert is an 11/10 hear both in range and in engagement. If you watch the video of this show (Dario Romero’s YouTube channel) you will see a borderline ecstatic Robert bouncing throughout the show. Just unreal.

Ep. 278 – The Heart of Markness Led Zeppelin Podcast

This is a good one! For this episode I have chosen Jimmy Page & Robert Plant on the last night of their huge Unledded US tour. May 27, 1995 at The Gorge Amphitheater in George, Washington. This is a great venue known for it’s beauty, not unlike Red Rocks in Colorado.

Page/Plant end their tour on a high note with tight performances in a 3rd Eye recording of insanely great quality (Millard level). I play an epic Shake My Tree sung with conviction by Robert, a Dancing Days for the ages, and Calling to You. All of these performances are out of this world and will make you glad you heard them.

Ep. 273 – The Heart of Markness Led Zeppelin Podcast

This is a great show! The penultimate Page/Plant gig, December 2, 1998 Oberhausen, Westphalia. Unbelievable chemistry between all band members. Jimmy Page is absolutely on fire, and super precise in his tone, and delivery.

The band has never sounded better and they are ending their Walking Into Everywhere Tour with a hell of a bang. I play Heartbreaker, Walking Into Clarksdale (insane whammy work in this), and a How Many More Times for the ages.

Ep. 269 – The Heart of Markness Led Zeppelin Podcast

1996 was a great year for the Jimmy Page/Robert Plant partnership. After their tremendously successful 1995 Unledded tour, they both loosened and tightened up, and headed South (of the Equator) with a smaller coterie of musicians. They played Central and South America, Japan, and finally, Australia.

This recording is from their February 24, 1996 in Sydney. The recording is fantastic as is the performance. I play a super chill yet elegant Since I’ve Been Loving You (Robert hit’s that note perfectly), a raucous and percussively gorgeous Four Sticks, and we finish off the night with a brilliant and lively In The Evening, before we all drop from exhaustion. Enjoy

Ep. 265 – The Heart of Markness Led Zeppelin Podcast

On August 23, 1998 Jimmy Page and Robert Plant played on a “wet, miserable field” in the rain at the Bizzare Festival, in Cologne/Koln Germany. They were touring in support of Walking Into Clarksdale, which was produced/engineered by the late Steve Albini (RIP).

This is a fantastic, professionally broadcast, performance and all systems are go with Jimmy on fire, and Robert’s voice strong and in control. It’s brilliant. I play two songs off Clarksdale and then a very cool performance of Spoonful into a frenetic Whole Lotta Love.

I wrap it all up with a clip of Steve Albini talking about working with Jimmy and Robert, in an insightful, if irreverent, interview. Good stuff.

Ep. 239 – The Heart of Markness Led Zeppelin Podcast

We hear a scorching Page/Plant show, professionally recorded for broadcast on Westwood One) from October 1, 1998 in New Orleans, Louisiana. Everyone is on fire and Jimmy plays like a man possessed. I play Heartbreaker, Most High, and a blazing How Many More Times with Jimmy commanding his instrument like the virtuoso he is, esp when he and Robert go into a brilliant I Can’t Quit You, Baby in the middle, before jumping back into it. Really great stuff.

Ep. 209 – The Heart of Markness Led Zeppelin Podcast

This is a good one. June 25, 1995, Jimmy Page & Robert Plant at the Glastonbury Festival. This show is on fire throughout. I play scorching versions of Four Sticks, In The Evening (amazing), & Calling To You>Smokestack Lightning>Break on Through>Dazed (also amazing). This one is great!

Ep. 175 – The Heart of Markness Led Zeppelin Podcast – July 26, 1995

July 26 , 1995 Wembley Arena. Page/Plant on their triumphant reunion tour. Great stuff. We hear Wanton Song, a stellar In the Evening (enhanced by 2 orchestras and a middle eastern percussion section), and a rollicking epic Kashmir. A great show from a time. Nice recording as well.

Ep. 74 – The Heart of Markness Led Zeppelin Podcast

This show was taken from an FM broadcast from New Orleans October 1, 1998, and it smokes! Jimmy Page is on fire for the entire 1998 tour, but he gets better as the tour progresses, and this night is amazing. A great How Many More Times is played, with a bow solo, and even a bit of I Can’t Quit You. Great great performance.
